Welcome to another episode of what I would consider the morning journal read for me, but you might be watching this anytime during the day or night. We’ve been doing this on Periscope but now we’ve transitioned to more of a video-friendly format, so you can review them at any point in time. We discussed journal entries that I’ve done here each day, and I talked about certain topics that make sense to me. We’re a digital agency here in northern New Jersey. I run the company. I founded it a few years ago, and we’ve grown pretty fast. I’m trying to get back as much as I can from my experience in this entrepreneurial world and my pursuits to hopefully help you in your pursuit of your goals in starting a business, running a business. So let’s get on to the journal entry.
Today, we’re going to talk about wording and attitude. Are you listening? Because this is a really important one. I really found this to be fascinating as I was writing this down. We need to very careful on what we say to people every day versus what they hear. People interpret things a lot different and I’ve had this happen to me literally every day now that I think about it. Even being on the position to say “Make it a great day” versus “Have a great day” is two completely different things. That’s why I always try to think about ask someone to have a great day, you’re literally not giving them the right instructions. Make it a great day, make it a triumphant day as I say, is a whole different ball of wax.
One thing to consider is also expanding one’s vocabulary so that the vocabulary is different and more accurate to this decision of our thoughts because the concept of speaking with more acuity basically gives us a better intelligence reading of the end user or the person on the other side and predicting whether or not someone’s actually listening. Without checking in and confirming the intention of the dialogue, we might not have an understanding of our meanings being transferred. I think this is critical in sales. I always check in after a couple of conversational sentences and ask the person, “Did you understand what I said? Are you following me?” A lot of people don’t do this in their normal conversation and literally just people’s minds are just drifting.'We need to very careful on what we say to people every day versus what they hear.' -Matt CoffyClick To Tweet
The propensity for us over the phone is really where these mistakes happen. Communication is a very different process when people are not clearly listening and their minds are adrift getting wrecked on the reefs. Expanding our capabilities to pick up new vocabulary is an exciting prospect. But how do we do it without individually wrecking our day of spending time trying to learn vocabulary? That’s not the point here. It’s more about the reminder of words that we use and we carry within us to talk to ourselves, the way we speak to ourselves. Are we listening to ourselves is really what I’m talking about.
It’s also the direction to putting words. Very simply. One thing you can remember is to use “however” instead of “but.” When you’re speaking with someone and you say, “Blah blah blah but blah blah blah,” it’s contradicting what you actually said. If you used the phrase “however” now you’re adding value to the conversation. If you think about that in today’s normal traveling, instead of saying “but,” say “however.” It’s a completely different way to phrase out a discussion, right?'We can become better communicators.' -Matt CoffyClick To Tweet
All these words, all the things that we talk about, the things that we say in each day, if we’re more accurate and we have the propensity to make sure the people are listening, you’re going to have a better result. The words change and improve our attitudes, and that’s the key towards something new. Exploring the value of communication with acuity, direction, and confirmation can win more arguments. Drive more sales and make a better family member. Now I just got to get to it.
That’s the thought for today. Think about making sure that when you speak that you’re being completely clear and make sure that you’re checking in as you work through your dialogue. It will help. Test a few more vocabulary words every once in a while. Add a few things to your sort of vernacular and that might be one for you to work on today.
